Inquiry Term 4 Maori Design

This design is my gift to the school when I leave for college next year. Us year 8's were tasked to make Maori Designs for Art this term. We are also supposed to describe the purpose of our design.

My design is mostly about me at school and my schoolmates. The 5 streaks represent my family and I. From biggest to smallest, it starts with my dad then my mum then my sister then me then my younger brother. The koru represents how much I've grown to like my school. The thing below the koru represents my fellow classmates and schoolmates. As you can see my design seems to flow in a way, that symbolises the fact that my classmates know how to flow with our ever changing schedule everyday at school.

Free Write: We had to include a giraffe on skates, a clown, birth, death, and travel between countries

The Travelling Circus
By Kelly Lim

“Woah, WOAH!” goes the crowd as they watch a giraffe skating around the circus while trying to balance plates on the tip of his nose. The giraffe gracefully jumps in the air and lands perfectly intact on the ground. The crowd cheers and yells as they throw money at the giraffe. “Thank you ladies and gentleman, that was our skating giraffe Jimmy.” Says the ringmaster.

The crowd cheers again as they expect the next act to come out. They waited for a couple of seconds until it turned into minutes of silence. “What are you doing?!” The ringmaster whisper shouts. “I don’t know!” replies the clown who was supposed to be the next act. “I’m too nervous.” “But John, you practised this act for months now… YOU EVEN PERFORMED THE OTHER DAY IN NEBRASKA!” Said the ringmaster in anger. “Yeah, but we’re in Russia.” Replied John the clown. “Oh my god you’re an idiot, why are you nervous anyway?” Asked the ringmaster. “My wife’s giving birth at China, and I accidentally left her there last week.” Said the clown as he was shaking. “Oh, that’s it?! We’re going to China tomorrow, because we got outstanding reviews there! Now go out there and perform your act.” Said the ringmaster. John the clown decides to be brave and perform his act. He did trip and fall a lot, but the crowd actually thought it was part of the act.

The entire circus crew was travelling to China in their private jet. Everyone was practicing their acts until- “Everyone, we have arrived!” Shouted the ringmaster in excitement, he was quite excited to eat authentic Chinese food. John the clown ran out of the jet to ask for a taxi to take him to the hospital where his wife was in labor. “Well, there he goes.” Says Jimmy in annoyance. The entire circus group agreed as Jimmy the skating giraffe skates away to grab his bags.

“Do you know where my wife Jessica is?” asked John. “Which one? We have hundreds and I can’t name them all out for you.” Replied the receptionist. “My wife!” Said John in anger. The receptionist sighs in annoyment. “Ohhhh, it’s Jessica Rollo-Koster.” Said John. The receptionist told him that his wife was already giving birth at this moment and he is not allowed to barge into the delivery room. John sighed and decided to wait in her room.

It has been nearly an hour, John waited for a while so he decided to take a nap. As soon as John was about to close his eyes. *BANG* The door was slammed open by a  hairy man in a women’s hospital gown and some nurses. “John!” Shouted the hairy man in a high pitched voice. “Jessica” shouted John in reply. They embraced each other in hugs. “So where’s that baby, and also how are you able to walk?” Asks John. “Well-” replies Jessica as she gets interrupted by a nurse bringing a strange looking baby with extreme facial hair, extreme back hair, but no hair on the top of his head into the room. John’s face turns from excited to disgusted. “What is that?!” Asks John in a rage. “It’s your child, Mike Rosopht.” Says Jessica. “You named him Mike Rosophtl?! His name is supposed to start with a J, like I don’t know maybe Jenga Blocks.” Says John in anger. “I’m leaving you… and our kid.” John walks out of the room as he slams the door to go back to practicing his act. Jessica just stands there then walks over to look out the window with her son. The nurses decided to give the man *cough* I mean woman some privacy. “I’ve gone through too much in my life, let’s take our lives together Mike Roshopht, nobody understands us anyway.” Says Jessica as he trembles. Jessica looks at her child one last time as he opens the window wide enough for a grown man and a hairy man baby to fit in. He gets on the window ledge with Mike Rosopht in hand… and jumps off. “Hairy men forever!” Screamed Jessica as he fell off the hospital building with Mike Rosopht

John the clown was performing his act later that night along with all his other circus crew members. John was on a unicycle while playing a violin. Suddenly a huge gust of wind came into the enclosed circus. *WHOOSSHH* Everyone was panicked by a mysterious voice. “JOHN, YOU DISOWNED YOUR OWN CHILD AND YOU LEFT YOUR OWN WIFE. I WILL HAUNT YOU FOR THE REST OF YOUR LIFE UNTIL YOUR DEATH!” It sounded like Jessica. The crowd was afraid and everyone started to run around like wild chickens. The air was swirling around like a tornado. The loud whooshing came to a sudden stop. The gust of air disappeared into the night. It took away a few of the props for the circus acts. Everyone felt relieved after that strange incident. “Hey, where’s John?” Asked the ringmaster feeling a bit worried. It seemed like John the clown disappeared away with that strange talking tornado. The police went on a hunt to look for him for years, his body was found hanging high up in a tree with a giant tree branch going through his body.

Burning a teabag in maths class

Today in math class, Ms. Stone decided to show us an experiment including a teabag, fire, and heat. Ms. Stone proceeds to put a teabag on a chair while opening it up a little at the bottom so that air can go inside to push the teabag fly. She sets the teabag on fire from the top, the teabag then burns and pieces of it fly until the entire teabag is in pieces in the air.

My conclusion is that if heat is inside the teabag, that means the heat will push the teabag up since heat only goes up.

Visual Art Rubric: Part 1

Image result for picasso artThis piece of art was made by Pablo Picasso, it is a portrait of Marie-Thérèse Walter. In this piece, Picasso evidently uses line, shape, and colour which are few of the elements of art. He uses many strange and interesting lines in the painting that are mostly straight on the face and on the background, as well as some strange colours on the face that give us the idea of a confident face that he took from real life. Speaking of real life, Picasso takes things from real life and gives them a very strange shape in his paintings.

Picasso used to draw realistic paintings very well ever since his teenage years. He painted very well, but he was an explorer and decided to paint differently. He wanted to push the boundaries of how we saw the world and make his paintings look different yet interesting.

The Monster Under My Boat - Sequel to Francis Brandywine: The task was to write a sequel to Francis Brandywine

The Monster Under My Boat - A sequel to Francis.
By Kelly Lim

I always lay on my bed late at night being kept awake by a very bad memory I try to forget. I barely escaped with my entire body, the only thing I left behind was my left leg, but hey at least I pay half for a pedicure now. Ah, if only I could be that optimistic most of the time. I can’t even afford a pedicure though. But enough about me now, let’s talk about what happened to me exactly 20 years ago from today.

I used to go to this place called Quetico Provincial Park with my family when I was younger. It was a very remote but beautiful reserve that was barely visited by anyone . It was my 19th birthday, so I decided to sneak out of the house with my friends and spend a night at Quetico. We set up our camp by a lake that was known to be 300 ft deep. Rumors spread around about a girl who drowned there because of some creature, some even say aliens, that kept knocking on the bottom of her boat. I never used to believe that story, and I hated how everyone was so gullible about such dumb rumors.

The night before we left to go home and face our soon to be furious parents, I decided to spend the entire night in the middle of the lake with a video camera proving that there was no such animal that knocks under your boat and drowns you. I made the biggest mistake of my life at that point. At exactly 12am, I went off into the thick woods and off to the lake when all my friends went to bed so they couldn’t follow me. I got into the boat I secretly set up in the morning and rowed for about 20 to 30 minutes to the middle of the lake which was where the girl apparently went missing.

I turned the camera on and started to record. “Alright, hello this is me Tobias Marlton. I am here in the middle of the lake at Quetico Provincial Park where this supposed girl has gone missing and was drowned by an alien.” I said to the camera not knowing something down below was listening. “It has currently been 5 minutes and still no knocking, also I’m trying to prove you all wrong about what happened to the girl and also I need to win a bet. I charged my camera to last the entire nigh-” Knock knock knock! The sound of mysterious knocking reached the bottom of my boat. “Uhh, that could have been some sticks or something. Anyways let’s play a game of cards alone to pass the ti-” KNOCK KNOCK KNOCK! The noise was back, but only louder.

I was shaking at that point, maybe the girl really did exist and really did drown, and that alien thing maybe did exist after all. I forgot to turn off my camera but I just set it down. There was another knocking noise that startled me. I decided to be a coward and row back to shore. I tried rowing as fast as I could. I was moving quite quickly and I was about to reach shore until my boat came to a sudden stop. I fell down with a loud bang, I accidentally sprained my arm which really stung. I tried rowing the boat again, but this time I couldn’t move. KNOCK KNOCK KNOCK KNOCK!!! The loud knocking wouldn’t stop and it kept shaking my boat.

I couldn’t think of anything anymore, the only thing I could think of was jumping off the boat and swimming to shore. So I did, I dived into the cold dark water. I swam as fast as I could with my sprained arm. Suddenly I felt a piercing pain at my left leg. I silently screamed with tears coming out of my eyes. I had realised my left leg was bitten off. I kept on swimming with my arms at that point, with tears being mixed with the lake water. I reached the shore eventually. I looked back at the lake to see what bit my leg off, I saw nothing but a trail of mud and blood in the water. I realised I left my camera on the boat, but that didn’t matter at this point.

I crawled back to my campsite and woke my friends up, they saw my bloody and wet body and helped me clean myself. They asked me what happened, so I told them everything, from me sneaking off until the part where my leg was bitten off. They
drove me back home to send me to the local clinic. On our way home, one of my friends remembered something. “Sooo, about that bet.” “Oh yeah haha, I guess you won.” I laughed awkwardly thinking it was a joke that he would seriously bring that up when I was in need of help. “Uhh yeah, where’s my ten bucks?” He asked curiously. I just glared at him and pulled out a 10 dollar note out of my dirty yellow backpack. I shoved it into his hand and looked away. I couldn’t believe he would still ask for money which I could have used on band aids. I looked out of the window as we went past the border that meant we had left the beautiful yet scary Quetico.

That memory will always be in the back of my head, following me wherever I go. I vowed to never return to the park again. The girl who went missing had a very unfortunate thing happen to her. I feel very lucky to have survive the event she went through. I now ride a wheelchair since I lost the ability to move my right leg. Whoever reads this, just know that anything could be waiting out there in the dark to eat you, even a monster under your boat.

The consequences for Tobias riding a boat to the middle of the lake late at night were really bad. The camera he left behind was somehow still turned on and unharmed. It took up a noise that sounded like murmuring. “He didn’t answer the door, so I just had to eat him.” The creature probably had no friends and was very lonely (probably because he eats them). The video then records some kind of muddy creature jumping into the air and swimming towards land. It looked nothing like a beautiful fish or anything like fish at all, it looked like a round thing with fins, legs and arms, it was also covered completely in mud from top to bottom. It walked away and into the thick forest, hopefully to never be seen again.

Accomplishable Algebra: The task was to identify patterns and find its pattern

Accomplishable Algebra
We are learning to identify the rule for a pattern of numbers

Multiplication practice:

56 ➗ 8 = 7            72 ➗ 9 = 8      44 ➗ 11 = 4
45 ➗ 9 = 5             64 ➗ 8 = 8  56 ➗ 7 = 8
835 ➗ 5 = 7            144 ➗ 12 = 12  27 ➗ 3 = 9
82 = 64                      92 = 81                         72 = 49
